Styling A Small Space

My husband and I just moved from a 1,500 square foot apartment into a 500 square foot apartment. That's right, only 500 square feet to work with! Both of us did our best to downsize and donate any unnecessary items; leaving behind on the necessities! Obviously, this was not a full proof plan. We were left figuring out how to make all of our "must-have" items fit into a smaller space.

I decided to embrace the challenge and began using some unexpected items as a form of decoration. We hung our bikes on hooks that display them on a blank wall between the kitchen and living room. I put magnets and hooks all over the kitchen to display cookware because we had no drawer space. We replaced our full size dining table with a bar-height, counter with shelves and a cutting board to maximize kitchen space!

Displaying items was just stage one! I brightened up the apartment, and made it appear larger, by decorating with light colors. I used a lot of white, light grey, and teal to lighten up the whole house.

Just because you live in a small space, you shouldn't have to sacrifice your style. Yes, your home may look a little more eclectic because you displayed your cookware and bikes, but that doesn't mean that it's not still functional and stylish!

Choose furniture with clean lines and small arms, or no arms, to open up a small living room. Add mirrors to an accent wall, use bright colors, open windows, and utilize every inch of space.

I am always looking for my next challenge! If you have a small home, or any size home, that you need help decorating, contact me!
